C10 from/to Yangon Station |
The line from Yangon to Danyingon together with the lines C10 (Yangon –Pyay) and C20 (Yangon – Mandalay) forms the Yangon Circle Line and serves the local mass transport in Yangon, the complete circle has 35 stops. A two miles long branch line was opened from Ma Hlwa Gone on the line C20 (Yangon – Mandalay) to Bauktaw in 1911 which was extended by another seven miles to Mingaladon Cantonment in 1926. The missing link to Danyingon on the line C10 (Yangon – Pyay) was finished in 1959, at the same time the complete line was double tracked and a separate double track was laid from Yangon station to Ma Hlwa Gone station. It was planned to electrify the line, however the plans were never realized due to the lack of electricity in Myanmar. Currently the plans have been revived to electrify he line with the help of Japanese development funds. The expansion of the Mingaladon Airport (Yangon International Airport) runway in 1990 required a relocation of the line around the airport. Today the line is frequented by Circle Line trains in both directions. According to the "New Light of Myanmar" newspaper about 150.000 passengers use this line every day. At Ma Hlwa Gone the tracks have to cross the major line C20 (Yangon – Mandalay) which often leads to delays.

PY1 ext. to Mogyopit planned |
After the student uprisings in 1988, the military junta had decided to relocate the universities from downtown Yangon to remote suburbs Dagon (this line), Thanlyin (lines Y03 and Y04) and Hlaw Karr (lines Y05) in order to prevent further uprisings. All universities were connected to the railway network. The short branch between Togyaunggale on the line C20 (Yangon – Mandalay) and Dagon University was opened in 2005. Most of the trains running on the line are direct trains from Yangon Station using Japanese kiha railcars. A further extension of the branch line to Mogyopit on the line C10 (Yangon – Pyay) which would form a second circle line around Yangon was planned by the military junta, but will most probably not be constructed (see line PY1).

As the old port along the Strand Road at downtown Yangon became more and more useless as large vessels were unable to reach this port due to lack of sufficient water depth a new deep seawater port was constructed at Thilawa southeast of Yangon; it was opened on the 9th of November 1997. However it took another six years until the port was connected to the railway network. First parts of the line were already opened ten years earlier on the 31st of July 1993 excluding the bridge over the Bago River.

After the student uprisings in 1988, the military junta had decided to relocate the universities from downtown Yangon to remote suburbs Dagon (line Y02), Thanlyin (this line) and Hlaw Karr (lines Y05) in order to prevent further uprisings. This line was built in the late 1980s. The reason for building this line remains a secret for me. According to Google maps the line seems to end up in an Army camp (maybe that's the reason for building the line).
