This line connects the city of Myitkyina on the shores of the Ayeyawaddy River in the north of Myanmar with the railway network of Myanmar. Construction by the “Mu Valley State Railway” started from both north and south right after the British had conquered the north of Myanmar. The required materials and rollings stock were transported to Myitkyina on the Ayeyawaddy River, thus the first part of the line was opened between Myitkyina and Mogaung in 1890. The line was not built along the Ayeyawaddy River but leads through the hilly hinterland west of the Ayeyawaddy River. Thus the line has gradients up to 1:60. Building the line west of the Ayeyawaddy River required crossing the river near Mandalay. Until 1934 a ferry between Amarapura and Sagaing was used to connect the northern part of the line with the rest of the railway network. The Ava Bridge constructed in 1934 was the first bridge in Myanmar that crossed the Ayeyawaddy River (and for a long time it remained the only one!). However the bridge connected the isolated northern section between Sagaing and Myitkyina with the rest of the railway network for a short period. In WWII the bridge was destroyed and the ferry service was reintroduced until the bridge was reconstructed. The goods tariff book from 1957 still lists ferry services between Amarapura and Sagaing. Between Naba and Mohnyin the alignment was altered using a deep cutting to avoid slopes and a tunnel. This shortened the line by around half a kilometre, the date of the realignment is unknown to me.

This line was built to connect the fertile plains and copper mines around Monywa with the line Mandalay - Myitkyina. The first section to Alon was opened in April 1900. The first prolongation to Budalin was finished in 1922, followed by a further prolongation to Ye-U four years later. Only 20 years later the prolongations were removed during WWII by the Japanese. It took several decades until the removed parts were rehabilitated. In addition the missing link between Ye-U and Khin-U on the line between Mandalay and Myitkyina was constructed. The latter section measuring 26.8km required building of 270 bridges (?), the largest one is 647.7m long and crosses the Mu River on 24 pillars. The dams on both ends of the bridge measure 2.2 and 2.4km. The construction of the missing link between Ye-U and Khin-U required a relocation of Ye-U station as the old station was designed as a terminus and did not allow an extension with crossing of the Mu River. There seems to be a short branch southeast of Monywa which leads to a famous temple area (Thousand Buddhas, Aung Sakkya Pagoda, Maha Bodhi Ta Htaung Standing Buddha). Satellite images show a railcar in a small terminus station. I don’t have any further information in this branch line.

Initially this line connected the line between Mandalay and Myitkyina, which is running through the hinterland, with the Ayeyawaddy River at Katha. At the beginning the line facilitated construction of the line N10 Myohaung – Myitkyina as construction was not only started from the end points, but also on sections in between. Required construction materials were brought on the Ayeyawaddy River to Katha and then transported to Naba. Later the line especially served goods transportations as the Ayeyawaddy River north of Katha is often not navigable during the dry season. In the 1920s a British police officer served at Katha which later became a very famous writer. His name was George Orwell. For a long time Katha remained the terminus of the line. In 2009 construction of a prolongation to Bhamo on the Ayeyawaddy River 150km east of Katha was started. Construction of the line required building a bridge over the Ayeyawaddy River. While the construction work of the bridge was finished successfully, the remaining sections are still under construction, but it seems that work has been stopped.

Alongside the massive extension of the railway network in the 1990s the military junta also constructed various new airports in the country. In the 1990s a new airport near Myitkyina was built. As for other airports in Myanmar this airport was also connected to the railway network to support construction and to supply kerosene. However according to satellite images the short branch to the airport is already most probably out of service.
